I often get asked about my training and lifestyle by people I train. What training do I do? What do I eat? How much sleep do I get? How do you fit everything in? People often think that the health and fitness game comes naturally to me and is straight forward. But the reality is I face the same challenges everyone else does. My week starts on a Sunday. I spend 60 minutes (max) preparing my food for the week. Meat. Veg. Rice. That’s it. I take other fruit, cereal, and bars to eat through the day. My weekdays starts at 4:15am. I train every morning at 4:40am till around 6:00am. I strength train 5 days per week, I do conditioning 3-4 times per week, and play 40 mins of badminton in my lunch breaks at work twice a week. I aim to get 10000 steps per day. I work 6 days a week @ultimateconditioning or @marbisports as a strength and conditioning coach. I work 10-12 hours a day. Because I’m up early, and busy all day I go to bed early and get a good amount of quality sleep. Nothing I do is ground breaking, and I’m not suggesting what I do is the way everyone should go about their health and fitness journey. I do all of this because I love to do it. But there are sacrifices I have had to make. A huge one is family time. But I’m lucky because my wife, @sallysaunders, and kids are so supportive and they are always in the gym so I still get to spend time with them. Also, my weekends are for my family. I think the point I’m trying to make is that things aren’t always as they seem. Everyone’s lives are busy. Everyone faces their own challenges. How you fit health and fitness into your life is just a puzzle that needs to be solved. There is always a solution. You just need to search in the right places. #capacitypowerefficiency

External motivation vs internal motivation. Both are powerful, and useful tools at different points in time. However, In my opinion, one will always prevail. One will drive you to push harder. One will drive you to keep turning up. This one will keep those feet moving in the right direction. So remember this, the song you put on for that motivational boost will end. The 10km fun run you sign up for, and complete, will come and go. That Bali body you created for your honeymoon will wither away. So my words of advice, don’t rely on external motivation. It can’t set your alarm for you to get up. It can’t prepare your lunch for you. It can’t pick up the weights. It can’t pedal your bike. It can’t drive you to the gym. It can’t say no to that piece of chocolate you know you don’t need. Embrace your internal strength. You might just surprise yourself! #capacitypowerefficiency

Proper training requires programming that allows for progression. That’s why @ultimateconditioning I use 8 week blocks to help those training to experience the overload they need to progress effectively. Over the years I’ve found the hardest part of my job is to educate people about how to train, and how to be efficient in the gym. Many think that constantly changing what you do in the gym, or in life for that matter, will help achieve long term results. results. Unfortunately this is largely untrue and this way of training is constantly reinforced through the internet, and social media. When your trying to get better, have a plan, have a program, gradually progress, and you will achieve your results!! Comfortable is a word I have been discussing with the people training @ultimateconditioning quite a bit over the last week. Being comfortable is something the human body is constantly striving for! When we are hungry, our brain is quick to start reminding us to eat. When we are cold, we are sent constant messages from our central command system to warm-up. We keep getting these messages until we become comfortable again. Funnily enough, the same happens when we exercise. Training should be uncomfortable within the parameters of your capabilities. Remember the change process is hard. Sometimes you just have to tell your brain to shut the fuck up!! Experience the difference. #capacitypowerefficiency

A major part of my job coaching @ultimateconditioning is to educate the people training in the gym. Although people walk into the gym to train, the process of training can’t be undertaken unless there is an understanding of: • what they need to do • why they need to do it • how they need to do it • when to work hard • when to rest The easiest thing I can do when people come to train in the gym is crush them with intensity. However, there is no thought process involved in this, and the risks far outweigh the rewards. Don’t be fooled by intensity. Buy into the process of learning, understanding, and long term success. Developing long lasting habits is a process of appropriate and targeted programming. ••• The most common goal often identified by those wishing to start a health and fitness journey is weight loss, or general health and fitness. Both these goals are often attacked with high intensity training, and unrealistic eating plans. ••• Although high intensity training is a very viable method to use to achieve results initially, the results that are achieved will be short lived due to the individual not having the appropriate physiological adaptations necessary to allow for continued improvement. It would be like trying to put icing on a cake before it has been baked. ••• Coaches like @coachgambetta and @coachjoeljamieson provide great resources which guide programming @ultimateconditioning. ••• Everyone has different approaches to training.
